Pet Microchipping/ Licensing and Rabies Vaccination Compliance

Mountain Humane serves as Blaine County’s impound facility and dog licensing administrator. The licensing program really is driven by Blaine County Animal Code, which requires anyone owning a dog six months or older to be current on their rabies vaccination. Pet owners must be prepared to show proof of an “up to date” rabies vaccination at all times. Through municipal impound contracts with Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey, Bellevue, Fairfield, and the unincorporated county, Blaine County’s ordinance requires Mountain Humane to verify current rabies information on all impounds. This ordinance has recently been updated allowing microchips to replace the county dog license as a more effective dog license management program with a database for tracking both rabies vaccine compliance and pet identification to assist in reuniting lost animals with their owners.

Mountain Humane offers a free microchip to all Blaine County resident animals. If your pet ever gets loose or lost and ends up at the shelter, the microchip will help us reunite you with your pet quickly, while also ensuring your pet’s vaccination history is fully compliant. A microchip allows our staff to access the computer database, identify the owner, and make contact immediately.
We continue to sell dog licenses to members of the community who prefer the conventional dog tag.

To get your pet microchipped, and stay up to date on rabies and other vaccinations, make a regular annual wellness exam appointment at Mountain Humane by calling 208-788-4351 ext. 302 or emailing medical@mountainhumane.org.
